Thomas Pynchon: The Crying of Lot 49

The Crying of Lot 49

Description

The highly original satire about Oedipa Maas, a woman who finds herself enmeshed in a worldwide conspiracy, meets some extremely interesting characters, and attains a not inconsiderable amount of self knowledge.

It's election time at Mouseford Academy and the candidates from the Lizard and Gecko student clubs face some challenges if they want to get elected president. Certainly not helping matters is the arrival of a mysterious black ship off the shores of the island and it's trying to pollute the beach! The girls must use all their investigative skills to root out the connection between the ship and the campaign. The fates of the election and their beautiful island home is at stake! "-Peter Dreier, The Nation "Why David Sometimes Wins is an exceptional book that will be of widespread interest to scholars and activists alike. "-Howard Kimeldorf, American Journal of Sociology "This book is a must read for The Crying of Lot 49 download epub organizers. The analysis of how a small and poor, but motivated, group of workers triggered a social movement provides invaluable lessons on what to do and not do as we struggle with the challenges of the 21st century. "-Andy Stern, President, Service Employees International Union "How does David defeat Goliath and, equally important, avoid becoming Goliath? The answer is to develop strategic capacity, an ongoing interactive process of experimentation, learning, and adapting. This fascinating book shows how Cesar Chavez and the UFW created and then lost its strategic capacity-an important lesson on leadership and organization. "-Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Harvard University "Through unforgettable and compelling stories, Marshall Ganz convincingly shows how we need not wait for the right time in history, but how we can all participate in making history together and how the resources to do so can be found in one another.

J D McClatchy: Four Seasons, the

Four Seasons, the

Description

For the poet, even the most minute details of the natural world are starting points for flights of the imagination, and the pages of this collection celebrating the four seasons are brimming with an extraordinary range of observation and imagery. Here are poets past and present, from Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Wordsworth to Whitman, Dickinson, and Thoreau, from Keats, Blake, and Hopkins to Elizabeth Bishop, Ted Hughes, Amy Clampitt, Mary Oliver, and W. S. Merwin. Here are poems that speak of the seasons as measures of earthly time or as states of mind or as the physical expressions of the ineffable. From Robert Frost's tribute to the evanescence of spring in "Nothing Gold Can Stay" to Langston Hughes's moody "Summer Night" in Harlem, from the "stopped woods" in Marie Ponsot's "End of October" to the chilling "mind of winter" in Wallace Stevens's "The Snow Man," the poems in this volume engage vividly with the seasons and, through them, with the ways in which we understand and engage the world outside ourselves.

Beginning with the question: "God is here, so what are you going to do about it?" Goswami calls for a plan of action that involves applying "quantum thinking" to a variety of societal issues. He issues a call for a spiritual economics that is concerned with our well-being rather than only our material needs; democracy that uses power to serve, instead of dominating others; education that liberates rather than shackles; and new healthy practices that restore wholeness. This is the second of two volumes describing the Danube Cycle route, a 1717km cycle ride following the lower part of the Danube, Europe's second longest river. This guidebook describes the route from the vibrant Hungarian capital of Budapest through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Romania to the river's delta on the shores of the Black Sea. The cycling is generally level with a few gentle gradients, mostly on quiet country roads or riverside flood dykes. The 32 stages vary from 30-100km, with some longer excursions and surfaces are mostly asphalt and in good condition, suitable for hybrid or touring cycles. Cycling infrastructure is generally good in Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. In Romania, where there is no waymarking and often long distances between places to sleep and eat, this guidebook gives a detailed route description, Four Seasons, the download ebook maps for each stage at a cycle-friendly a scale of approximately 1:150,000 and a listing of all places offering accommodation.

Xu Lei,Kathy Mok: Grave Robbersa Chronicles Vol 1-6 Box Set

Grave Robbersa Chronicles Vol 1-6 Box Set

Description

The six-volume set of The Grave Robbers Chronicles is much more than a horror-filled adventure story with likable characters and cliff-hanger plot twists. Author Xu Lei has created a world based upon facts and some of the more unbelievable details in these books are actually quite real. Corpses that have resisted decomposition for millennia have been discovered in China. The most famous of them is Lady Dai, discovered in Changsha and now kept in the Hunan Provincial Museum. This lady, whose body has remained largely intact in the 2000 years since her death, boasts skin that remains moist and supple. Some of her joints are mobile be moved, her organs are intact, and she still has her eyelashes, as well as her left eardrum. The secret of her body s survival continues to be a mystery to modern science. The caves in Xu Lei s novels, with their tunnels that link mountain peaks and their deep lakes and waterfalls, may seem incredible but they exist. One particular cavern, the Er Wang Dong cave in Chongquing Provence, is so huge that it has its own weather system. Thick clouds and heavy fog emerge from the humidity formed in the floor of the cave as it hits the colder air above. It also contains deep pools and swift-running streams, and who knows? Perhaps within the very depths of the cave lies an undiscovered waterfall. The deadly giant salmon in Bronze Tree of Death has to be mythical, right? Wrong. In recent years, a grouper was caught in the South China Sea near the Nansha Islands that weighed in at 683 pounds. The monstrous fish was a Pacific Goliath Grouper, a species of fish that can weigh up to 1000 pounds, and almost makes Xu Lei s salmon sound like a sardine."

Serge has bought a modern work of art for a large sum of money. Marc hates the painting and cannot believe that a friend of his could possibly want such a work. Yvan attempts, unsuccessfully, to placate both sides with hilarious consequences. The question is: Are you who you think you are or are you who your friends think you are? Maria Tatar: Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood

Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood

Description

Ever wondered why little children love listening to stories, why older ones get lost in certain books? In this enthralling work, Maria Tatar challenges many of our assumptions about childhood reading. Much as our culture pays lip service to the importance of literature, we rarely examine the creative and cognitive benefits of reading from infancy through adolescence. By exploring how beauty and horror operated in C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, and many other narratives, Tatar provides a delightful work for parents, teachers, and general readers, not just examining how and what children read but also showing through vivid examples how literature transports and transforms children with its intoxicating, captivating, and occasionally terrifying energy. In the tradition of Bruno Bettelheim's landmark The Uses of Enchantment, Tatar's book is not only a compelling journey into the world of childhood but a trip back for adult readers as well.

Mayday: a Novel

Description

Twelve miles above the Pacific Ocean, a missile strikes a jumbo passenger jet. The flight crew is crippled or dead. Now, defying both nature and man, three survivors must achieve the impossible. Land the plane. From master storyteller Nelson DeMille and master pilot Thomas Block comes Maydaythe classic bestseller that packs a supersonic shock at every turn of the page....the most terrifyingly realistic air disaster thriller ever. Like a growing tidal wave, the escaping air was gathering momentum. A teenaged girl in aisle 18, seat D, near the port-side aisle, her seat dislocated by the original impact, suddenly found herself gripping her seat track on the floor, her overturned seat still strapped to her body. The seatbelt failed and the seat shot down the aisle. She lost her grip and was dragged after it. Her eyes were filled with horror as she dug her nails into the carpet, as the racing air pulled her toward the yawning hole that led outside. Her cries were unheard by even those passengers who sat barely inches away from her struggle. The noise of the escaping air was so loud that it was no longer decipherable as sound, but seemed instead a solid thing pounding at the people in their seats......

Description

Most of these strips in this volume have not seen print since originally running in Hearst newspapers over 70 years ago. With a full 104 Sunday pages this time around, this particular book is jam packed with little room for extras, but we did squeeze in a half-dozen or so pages' worth of never-before-seen Herriman memorabilia (all in color), including a spectacular full-color New Year's card illustration done for a friend.

Named one of the Ten Best Novels of the Year by Time and Library Journal, and one of the Best Books of the Year by The Washington Post • Esquire • U.S. News & World Report • NPR/On Point • St. Louis Post-Dispatch A Massachusetts Children s Book Award Winner *If your plan depends on you suddenly being "discovered" by some big shot, your plan will probably fail. Nobody suddenly discovers anything. Things are made slowly and in pain. Humans are built to wander. History is crisscrossed by their tracks. Sometimes there are obvious reasons for it: to get better food for themselves or their animals; to escape weather, wars, or plague. But sometimes they go at great expense and risk in the name of God, seeking a place that feels sacred, that speaks to the heart. In her first ever cookbook, Mireille Guiliano provides her millions of readers with the recipes that are the cornerstone of her philosophy-mouthwatering, simply prepared dishes that that favour fresh, seasonal ingredients and yield high satisfaction. Organised around Mireille's three Krazy & Ignatz: Komplete 1937-1938: Shifting Sands Dusts Its Cheek in Powdered Beauty free download pdf favourite pastimes-breakfast, lunch, and dinner-these recipe emphasise pure flavour, balanced ingredients and easy cooking methods. Eating pleasurably is just as important as eating healthfully, and Mirille devotes chapters to dessert and chocolate (essential components of any Frenchwoman's diet) and incorporates advice on entertaining, menu planning, and wine selection.

Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers

Description

Exiled from Vietnam over thirty years ago, Thich Nhat Hanh has become known as a healer of the heart, a monk who shows us how the everyday world can both enrich and endanger our spiritual lives. In Going Home he shows us the relationship between Buddha and Jesus by presenting a conversation between the two. In this unique way we learn how such concepts as resurrection and mindfulness converge. The brotherhood between Jesus and Buddha can teach us to "practice in such a way that Buddha is born every moment of our daily life, that Jesus Christ is born every moment of our daily life."

Rudolf Steiner,M. Barton: The Incarnation of Ahriman: The Embodiment of Evil on Earth

The Incarnation of Ahriman: The Embodiment of Evil on Earth

Description

While we know of Ahriman from Persian mythology, Rudolf Steiner spoke of him as an actual, living spiritual entity. This being, he said, works to embed people firmly into physicality, encouraging dull, materialistic attitudes and a philistine, dry intellect. In these extraordinary lectures Steiner, in rare prophetic mode, talks about an actual incarnation of Ahriman on the earth and the potential consequences. Just as Christ incarnated in a physical body, so would Ahriman incarnate in the Western world - before 'a part' of the third millennium had passed. Steiner places this incarnation in the context of a 'cosmic triad' - Lucifer, Christ and Ahriman. Ahriman will incarnate as a counterpoint to the physical incarnation of Lucifer in the East in the third millennium BC, with the incarnation of Jesus Christ in Palestine as the balancing point between the two. Over the period during which Steiner developed anthroposophy - a speaking career that spanned two decades and more than six thousand lectures - he referred to the idea of Ahriman's incarnation only six times. These six lectures, together with an additional supporting excerpt, are reproduced in their entirety, and under one cover, for the first time.

We discover that women had many rights and freedoms: they could own property, run businesses, and represent themselves in court. The Sense of an Ending

Description

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life.
